Corporate campus for a boutique bicycle brand, including offices, warehouses,
design studios, marketing, and social services. Along with a message of
leisure and sport, the brand seeks to promote stewardship and conservation
through the use of reclamation. Situated below an electric utility right-of-way,
along the path of a concrete wash, this project aims to take the ugly, unwanted
and re-capture its potential. By dynamically storing, cleaning, and controlling
the flows of water on this site, distinct divisions are created that begin to
serve and inform programmatic adjacencies. Like the weather in Los Angeles,
seasonal fluctuations are exploited for robust opportunities. Currently, what little rain there is in the Los Angeles region is ushered off of our streets and mountainsides, into concrete channels, and out to the ocean. Once flows are established and a closed-loop system maintained, other elements such as landscape, programs, and circulation are overlayed. Ecotones are amplified by the web of social, business, and transportation loops. The entire complex works as a machine, capturing any unclaimed water that passes through and is a prototype for development in similar underdeveloped and underused areas. |
