| Michael Kmak, AIA is an architect based in Chicago, IL. Michael draws inspiration from the urban environment. His focus is on the patterns and complexities of daily life intersected with patterns and complexities of the urban condition which he believes create new formulas that we can use to design our future. To this end, Michael has lived and worked in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington DC (and now Chicago again, because Goldilocks thought it was just right). Having grown-up in the Chicago-area, Michael completed his undergraduate architecture education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). Even before beginning college, the city always presented an intrigue and new goals; his education at UIC further enhanced his awareness of the history and the precipice of the future in design. Afterward, Michael started working with UrbanLab where he began an informal crash-course in real world design and big ideas. With UrbanLab, he led projects envisioning the future of cities, such as Aurora, IL and Chicago in 2106. Because, Chicago is the city that makes no little plans, after all. In Los Angeles, Michael studied at UCLA and worked with Make Architecture. Here he learned new parametric systems, a more refined design method, and helped build and design numerous homes, restaurants, bars, and even projects for TV shows, because, it's LA after all. In Washington DC, Michael worked with Shinberg.Levinas leading the design and construction of new schools, religious institutions, retail environments, and homes. And a Cartier, because, it's DC after all. Michael has finally returned to Chicago's open arms, because, it's home after all. |
